10 Barrel: The Beer That Gives Back

Bend, Oregon's 10 Barrel Brewing is all about crushing the outdoor lifestyle, staying sustainable and giving back.

It’s hard to think of a reason not to enjoy a nice cold pint of beer, especially after a long, hot day on the trail. But what if there were tons of reasons you could feel good about knocking back a few of your favorite brews? At 10 Barrel, beer isn’t just about good taste and good times. It’s about giving back to the planet and the communities around us.

Your beer of choice isn’t a decision solely based on your taste. That’s because 10 Barrel’s four flagship beers ALL partner with a unique nonprofit initiative. One percent of profits from these beers, whether they’re sold over the counter at your local liquor store or straight from the taps at one of 10 Barrel’s five pubs, go towards charity.

Meanwhile, their all-new Nature Calls Mountain IPA gives proceeds to the Conservation Alliance. There’s something for everyone. This initiative is an innovative way to make each purchase go toward a good cause, but it’s far from 10 Barrel’s only effort to reduce their footprint and give back.

In 2019, they diverted 97.5 percent of their solid waste via recycling and other sustainability initiatives, sending only 2.5 percent to landfills. They have a veritable slew of water, energy, and natural gas conservation initiatives running nonstop, and have installed over 1,000 solar panels in their breweries, reducing the annual emission by 365 metric tons and generating over 500,000 kwh per year. This accounts for 25 percent of 10 Barrel’s electric footprint and is part of their goal to transition to 100% renewables in the near future.

As a brand, 10 Barrel isn’t just focused on giving back, of course, but on providing exceptional quality. “Early on, our founders hired the best brewers in the industry, and haven’t had any turnover since,” said 10 Barrel’s Andy Goggins. “We don’t like to brag about it but we’re proud to have one of the most award-winning team of brewers in the industry and Pacific Northwest.” said Goggins, “We brew some kick-ass high-quality beer we can stand behind, which I think gives us more leeway to have fun with the marketing and content around our brands.” Each 10 Barrel pub has a dedicated brewmaster attached to it, with full oversight to craft their own concoctions and experiment with a variety of brew styles. This system has led to a series of unique, interesting beer lines.

One of the coolest initiatives 10 Barrel runs, however, is their Drink It Forward program. This program sees each of 10 Barrel’s five pubs working with a variety of local nonprofits, designating one night per month where 100 percent of proceeds from beer and food go directly to the nonprofit.

The point is, good beer is good beer. But when good beer also gives back and works to protect the nature we all love… Well, there’s not a whole lot else we can ask for! So pour yourself a glass.
